| Sepultura - A-Lex Music Review By RipperEagle Rating: 4.5
Sepultura, dating back to their debut on Roadrunner Records in 1984, have been a force to be reckoned with in the metal scene. And while things have changed around them, their sound hasn’t changed much, but the people making the noise have. Now only down to one original member of the group, guitarist Andreas Kisser, the band released their 13th studio album on January 27th, 2009 entitled “A-Lex”. The thoughts and concepts of this album are based off of the movie “A Clockwork Orange” which is, of course, an adaptation of the Stanley Kodiak novel. The band has changed bass player (now with Paulo Xisto) singer (Max Cavalera left the band in 1996, giving way to Derrick Green) and on this album a change of drummer, as Max’s little brother Igor has stepped out in favor of Jean Dolabella. This CD will, by all accounts, will feature some of the weirdest artwork you will ever see.
1. A-Lex I (N/A) 2. Moloko Mesto (5) -Absolutely brutal “song” lasting only 2:09: good luck figuring out the lyrics! 3. Filthy Rot (5) -Another short (2:46) song, but features some “drunk bump” backing vocals. 4. We’ve Lost You! (4) -Slow prodding song, but executed very well with a slow lead in for 1:06. 5. What I Do! (5) -Another lightning quick song (2:00) and heavy ass song. 6. A-Lex II (N/A) 7. The Treatment (5) -Middle length song and another hard hitter: lyrics can be understood! 8. Metamorphosis (5) -Great pounding song with some solid lyrics (just follow in the book). 9. Sadistic Values (3) -It’s good, but it just seems to drag, clocking in at 6:51: some could have been cut. 10. Forceful Behavior (4) -Back to normal: lyrics are quite strange on this song. 11. Conform (4) -More of the same, except this song doesn’t even get two minutes. 12. A-Lex III (N/A) 13. The Experiment (5) -Interesting lead in gives way to usual sounds: song has excellent lyrics. 14. Strike (5) -Very well constructed lead in with percussion from Dolabella. 15. Enough Said (4) -VERY short song (1:36) with only two lines of lyrics. 16. Ludwig Van (4) -A very ODD and unworldly song with some of the strangest stuff ever heard. 17. A-Lex IV (N/A) 18. Paradox (5) -Forceful ending track after two very strange tracks.
NOTE: Tracks 1, 6, 12, and 17 get no rating because they are lead ins with no lyrics.
