| Trivium - Shogun Music Review By RipperEagle Rating: 4.4
Calculating and figuring out what exactly Trivium is has never been easy. On their third release for Roadrunner Records, released on September 30th 2008, it seems clear that the guys are content on writing about Greek Mythology (although the title itself is Japanese for General). They also keep their solos and rhythm section at a peak, and no song is left behind (the four minute mark that is).
1. Kirisute Gomen (5) -The acoustic intro is actually the ending of Shogun backwards. 2. Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis (5) -Crazy song (6:50) which features fast paces and slow downs, scream and sing. 3. Down From the Sky (5) -Song is nothing much different then the one above: catchy chorus though. 4. Into the Mouth of Hell We March (5) -This was used on Madden 09: interesting song with a breakdown halfway through. 5. Throes of Perdition (5) -Great introduction and chorus is extremely catchy 6. Insurrection (5) -First song under five minutes long (4:57) another song with great structure. 7. The Calamity (4) -Not a bad song at all, pales a bit though compared to the others in front of it. 8. He Who Spawned the Furies (3) -Shortest song (4:08) sounds like it was a leftover from “The Crusade”. 9. Of Prometheus and the Crucifix (5) -Great chorus with deep singing from Matt Heafy: overall great song. 10. Like Callisto to a Star in Heaven (4) -Not bad at all: more of the same if you dug the earlier stuff. 11. Shogun (5) -More epic then epic: song is 11:55 and features a melodic breakdown from the four minute mark to about 7:40: despite the length, never gets boring. 12. Poison, Knife, or the Noose* (4) -A pretty good song, shortest outside of number eight. 13. Upon the Shores* (5) -Really good bonus track from the alternate version. 14. Iron Maiden* (2) -This sucks: it’s a cover of the Iron Maiden song but does it no justice.
*Bonus tracks with the alternate release: the alternate release featured a video DVD with documentary and “how-to play” tutorial from the band. It also cut “Shogun” down from 11:55 to 10:50.
