| Mastodon Crack The Skye Music Review By The RipperEagle Album Rating: 4.4
On March 24th, Mastodon released their 4th album, and their 2nd for record label Reprise, with “Crack the Skye”. An other worldly sound has dominated the band’s sound as they have progressed through their days in the spotlight, and they sound as close to a modern day Pink Floyd as you can get. Funny thing is, there is no consistent singer in the band, three of the four band members (one of the two guitarist, the bass player, and the drummer) all sing. And the band will even be making this CD into a movie, or so they said they were going to do that.
1. Oblivion (5) -Perfect tune to set the out of this world approach and feel to this CD. 2. Divinations (5) -Starts with a banjo (?) but becomes most straight forward song on the album: also stands to be the ONLY song under five minutes long at 3:39. 3. Quintessence (4) -If you noticed, the subjects are as zany as the band’s music is: it goes hand in hand. 4. The Czar: Part I: Usurper Part II: Escape Part III: Martyr Part IV: Spiral (4) -A four part song which makes sense if you know what the first word, usurper, means it goes in perfect order: song is 10:55 in length. 5. Ghost of Karelia (4) -Holy crap, now it all makes sense: The band from Maine has an obsession with Russia! Like it wasn’t obvious above with the use of Czar! 6. Crack the Skye (5) -Awesome song, second best behind Oblivion. 7. The Last Baron (4) -Topples Czar as the longest song at 13:00 on the nose: long up and down song.
Thoughts and comments are always welcome! Trust me, if you are interested in listening to this, it’s VERY hard to describe the total sound. Mix Pink Floyd if they played in 2009 and an acid trip together. | |
